ICARE: N. Maternal Depression and the Psychosocial Development of Children

Description:
This program was designed to provide physicians with the skills and knowledge for appropriate interventions for mothers with maternal depression thus minimizing the impact on early brain development and overall psychosocial development of the child.

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize pregnancy and postpartum as times of vulnerability which predispose some women to depression.
• Identify maternal depression as a signal of need on the part of the mother, child, and dyad.
• Describe the impact of maternal depression on early brain development and overall psychosocial development.
• Describe the role of the PCP in screening and surveillance, and the interventions that PCP's can offer in instances of maternal depression.
• Identify when and how to refer to include resources and support for referral.
• Recognize appropriate interventions for the mother and for the dyad.

Marian Earls, MD, FAAP
She is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, and also the medical director of Guilford Child Health or GCH Inc. Dr. Earls has a developmental consult clinic within GCH, Inc. and is medical director of the Neonatal Follow-up Clinic for the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Women’s Hospital in Greensboro. GCH was the pilot site for the Commonwealth Fund–supported Better Child Health and Development or ABCD Project, and Dr. Earls is the clinical director of that project. The Commonwealth Fund has an ABCD II project in several new states, and Dr. Earls has done training and consulting on early childhood mental health for this initiative.

Emma Miller, D.Div.
She received her D. Div. from the Universal Brotherhood University in Atlanta, Georgia and is currently a board member for the Association for Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health. She is an Early Learning Specialist and CATCH Consultant as well as the ABCD Project Manager and Consultant. Ms. Miller is the Manager and co-owner of the Gentle Touch Parent-Child Program located in Asheville, NC.
