ICARE: G. What Primary Care Providers Need to Know about Mental Health Issues Facing Returning Service Members and Their Families

This ICARE and Citizen Soldier Support program cosponsored web-conference will overview the range of normal and abnormal mental health responses among service members and their families before, during, and after mobilization, deployment, and redeployment. The conference speaker will also discuss the unique clinical aspects and medical needs of service members and their families.

Learning objectives: At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

- Identify the range of normal and abnormal mental health responses among service members and their families before, during and after mobilization, deployment, and redeployment

- Identify the unique clinical aspects and medical needs of service members and their families before, during, and after mobilization, deployment, and redeployment.

- Understand the concerns, needs and strengths of service member`s families in order to improve their care before, during, and after their loved one’s mobilization, deployment, and redeployment.

Harold Kudler, MD

Dr. Harold Kudler received his M.D. from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York and completed psychiatric residency training at Yale University where he served as Chief Resident at Yale-New Haven Hospital and later as Chief Resident/Clinical Instructor at the Yale Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Kudler’s expertise in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stems from clinical and research work with combat veterans, ex-prisoners of war, survivors of other traumatic events, and their families. He has reported on many aspects of PTSD including its diagnosis, biological and psychological characteristics, and its treatment. Dr. Kudler was the founding chair of the PTSD Practice Guidelines Task Force of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and was the first author of that Task Force’s Treatment Guideline for the Psychodynamic Treatment of PTSD. Most recently, in 2007, he was named Chair of the American Psychiatric Families and joined the Advisory Group of Sesame Workshop`s Talk, Listen, Connect II program which has produced a Sesame Street video designed to assist families with young children when a wounded combat returns home.
