What Can I Expect?

This workshop is an overview of DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR. It begins with an overview of the history and goals of the DSM, the five-axis diagnostic system, the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) Scale and the decision trees. The text revisions in DSM-IV-TR are summarized. The primary focus is upon describing major categories of adult mental disorders (psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and personality disorders). Some of the common disorders within these categories will be described and differential diagnostic considerations will be discussed. The format will combine lecture/discussion with videotaped case examples.

Learning Objectives:
Review the history of the DSM.
Review the use of the five-axis diagnostic system, GAF Scale and decision trees.
Examine the text revisions in DSM-IV-TR.
Describe the major categories of adult mental disorders including psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and personality disorders.
Examine the more common and difficult issues in differential diagnosis among these disorders.

This workshop is designed for social workers, psychologists, psychiatrist, nurses, counselors and other mental health professionals. It is designed for those who seek to review or sharpen their knowledge of the diagnosis.
