Updated format in 2008!

The evolving field of nurse management demands strong relationships, accurate application of sound business knowledge, and an intricate understanding of organizational structures. With the idea that today's nurse manager is much more than just a facilitator or supervisor, the Nursing Management Institute (NMI) was created to increase satisfaction and success by providing an educational program and the unprecedented opportunity to steer one’s professional career by participating in a self-directed internet-based program.

Nurse managers and aspiring nurse managers are invited to "take the helm" and develop their own learning plans through a comprehensive educational curriculum. Twelve, two-hour online courses are offered for continuing education credit and include instructional material with interactive learning opportunities*.

Participants may register online and access the courses in whatever sequence best matches their learning needs at times convenient to them. A passing score on the post test for each course awards two Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Contact Hours* and nurses can print out a certificate of completion for each course. A Certificate in Nursing Management will be awarded upon the successful completion of 10 courses (20 hours of credit). The registration fee for each course is $35.00 for North Carolina residents and $45.00 for non-North Carolina residents. Organizational discounts are available for blocks of 50 courses. For details, contact ekesler@wfubmc.edu.

Participants will also have access to selected services from the North Carolina AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) Digital Library. Electronic resources pertinent to nursing management and leadership are available through NMI course participation. For more information or a full subscription to the North Carolina AHEC Digital Library go to http://library.ncahec.net

NMI was developed through funding from the Duke Endowment and continues with support from Northwest AHEC, Greensboro AHEC, North Carolina AHEC, and the North Carolina AHEC Digital Library.

*Northwest AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Using NMI Effectively Within Your Organization

There are many ways in which organizations have used NMI effectively. Use the courses as a foundation for growth.

  1. Encourage nurses who aspire to advance to take NMI courses. You may find it very beneficial to use NMI as a tool for motivation. Nurses who have interest in moving up can improve their skill set before being considered for advancement.

  2. Create an incentive program. Many people are motivated to participate if they get something in return. In addition to buying courses for employees, organizations have used other incentives such as paid time to complete the courses, opportunities for advancement or pay raises, or recognition on annual personnel employee evaluations.

  3. Make NMI a group learning experience. Create an environment that fosters group learning by getting together to discuss NMI course content, answer questions, or apply what is being learned to real scenarios applicable to your organization. Create ongoing networking opportunities for NMI participants to keep them engaged with one another and the program.

  4. Let others know about your NMI success! Communicate with your staff and the organization about your involvement with NMI. Write an article for the newsletter. Post a goal chart for the employees involved in completing courses. Be sure to recognize achievements.
